If you take the trouble of understanding the language of his characters--he's very difficult for this American--you will gain a view of the lowest of the lowest on the social scale, presented in all its colorful and grim glory. Kelman's stories are short and hilarious; nonetheless, he can be subtle. I rank reading him as great fun.
