Miles Davis and John Coltrane were a highly appealing combination, but an unlikely one. Davis played his trumpet in a subtle, economical fashion, whereas the big-toned Coltrane was often forceful and aggressive on his tenor sax. In terms of how they approached their instruments, the two couldn't have been more different.
