Managed and produced by the late and notorious Johnny Baylor, the guy many accused of causing Stax's demise, Luther Ingram had a rich, soulful tenor that dripped with soul. He recorded many classic deep soul sagas, hitting his pinnacle with "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)," a gripper that passionately justified infidelity, with a whining guitar underscoring Ingram's heartfelt testimonial to his outside woman. The soulful "Ain't That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One)" dropped before "If Loving You" and should have been Ingram's first monster. You'll have to search a bit to find a more endearing tribute from a man to his woman. The midtempo, good-time feeling "I'll Be Your Shelter," like the previous two tracks, was co-written by Homer Banks, a Southern soul songwriting fool. It did well on the charts and provided a break from the heavy ballads, which was likewise for the joyful "My Honey & Me." Other goodies include "Steal Away to the Hideaway," "Missing You" and a scrumptious remake of Sam Cooke's "You Were Made for Me." Ingram's adaptation to Stax surprised many; before Stax, he had recorded urban and Northern soul 45s for tiny companies that were little more than P.O. boxes. ~ Andrew Hamilton, Rovi
