At first glance, Greatest Hits & More might seem like the perfect introduction to the music of the Delfonics. At first glance, Greatest Hits & More might seem like the perfect introduction to the music of the Delfonics. This 1998 CD contains some of the Philadelphia soul trio's most famous ballads and slow jams, including "La-La Means I Love You," "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," "Ready or Not, Here I Come," and "Break Your Promise." But here's the catch: Greatest Hits & More doesn't provide the original versions of these classics; it provides remakes. The original versions were, of course, the definitive versions, and how could the Delfonics' 1998 lineup (which consists of William "Poogie" Hart, Major Harris, and Randy Cain) improve on perfection? They can't. But that doesn't mean that these remakes aren't enjoyable. The voices of Hart, Harris, and Cain have held up well over the years, and they still bring plenty of charisma to gems they first recorded in the late '60s and early '70s. But while Greatest Hits & More is pleasing, it is hardly essential. Those who are making their first Delfonics purchase would do well to skip Greatest Hits & More and obtain Arista's 1997 CD La- La Means I Love You: The Definitive Collection, which lives up to its title and boasts the original versions of the Delfonics' essential hits. This collection of remakes is strictly for die-hard collectors. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
