Jan Berry and Dean Torrence took doo wop vocal techniques and grafted them on to the heavily echoed, surf-guitar style, creating, along with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, a California beach sound that dominated the pop charts for a brief time in the early '60s. Thanks to Jan Berry's songwriting abilities and considerable engineering skills (and with assistance from Wilson), Jan & Dean's singles show a high level of sophistication in both arrangement and sound that was rare for the time. Although they will always be associated with the 1960s surf boom, their best songs ("Surf City," "Dead Man's Curve," "Drag City"), have a kind of summery timelessness to them.
