For those who love great travel writing, Theroux's book is near the top of the heap. Theroux seems more of a miniaturest than, say, Chatwin or Sebald or Morris; he likes to focus on scenes and then move on to the next one without complications between successive frames. Theroux is also much funnier than Chatwin or Morris, although not as funny as Sara Wheeler. "Railway Bazaar" is also much more concerned with the people and places visited, than with the author's internal state evoked by the visit. Wonderful writing, exotic locations, the kind of book you could read twice or three times in a short period and enjoy each time.

All Aboard!
We love trains -riding them and reading about them when it is impossible to ride one. Paul Theroux takes us on a wonderful ride through Asia on a variety of trains, through a variety of cultures and conditions. He is a great wordsmith, and not only puts us in touch with the train and the scenery, but introduces us to people he meets along the way. His observations are keen and sometimes deeply thought, and often hunorous. Whether you are a "train person" or not, it is a real "magic carpet" book and I would recommend it to anyone who can read. If you can't read, get someone to read it to you!
