For there standing by the great Luxembourg rose-bush stood the very young woman who had given me so much pain the night before, and Madame la Marquise, who stood beside her, holding her hand, called to me, saying: "Come, my dear Submit; I have here a companion for you, whom you needs must love." "Mademoiselle Hortense Hertel, the youngest sister of Sieur Hertel de Rouville. whom you have such sad cause to know," and the young girl, holding out her hands in the most engaging manner, exclaimed: "My brother has unwillingly wrought you much grief; you must let me willingly make what reparation Lean."
