Because this set contains Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting Beethoven's Third, Fifth, and Ninth symphonies with either the Vienna or the Berlin Philharmonic, that is, the greatest Beethoven conductor of the twentieth century conducting the two greatest Beethoven orchestras of the twentieth century in the three central Beethoven symphonies.Maybe these are not the all-time greatest recordings Furtwängler ever made of the Third, Fifth, and Ninth. One could argue that the frenetic Vienna Third from 1944 is slightly more exciting than this ecstatic Vienna Third from 1953. One could argue that the 1942 Berlin Ninth is more demonic or the 1951 Bayreuth Ninth is more celebratory or the 1954 Philharmonia Ninth is more serene.
