Seller's Description:
Good. 'Imagine the clouds dripping, ' Ono writes, in one of the book's many Fluxus-attuned directives. 'Dig a hole in your garden to put them in. ' Described on its title page as a 'book of instructions', Grapefruit was first published in Tokyo by Wunternaum Press in a limited edition in 1964. This Touchstone paperback edition includes a two-sentence intro by John Lennon and a cover featuring a truly Didion-esque portrait by music photographer Raeanne Rubinstein. Spine is tight, and square, but has some creasing. Clean, unmarked interior. There are some bumped corners, light to moderate edge-wear, and areas of light rubbing to the covers. Featured Rare & Collectible.

Seller's Description:
Near Fine. The first Touchstone paperback edition of Yoko Ono's illustrated book, after the exceedingly rare 1964 first edition, of which only 500 copies were printed in Tokyo. Inscribed on the front endpaper "To Paul, Love Yoko Ono." In just about Fine condition, with only the slightest bit of edgewear and some creasing near the front joint. Internally clean and unmarked. "The original Grapefruit is split into five sections-Music, Painting, Event, Poetry, Object--with each page offering a conceptual direction for work yet to be created...After Ono married John Lennon, Simon & Schuster published a new edition of Grapefruit, though this version included some editorial revisions and additions--the most prominent among the latter being a short foreword authored by Lennon" (The New Yorker). This artist's book earned and has maintained fame as an early example of conceptual art, making her a predecessor to men like Kosuth and Weiner, who popularized the approach. A lovely copy, inscribed mysteriously to "Paul" (we assume not McCartney). Near Fine.

Seller's Description:
First Sphere edition of Ono's seminal piece of conceptual art. 12mo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the front free endpaper. The uncommon Sphere edition of Ono's Grapefruit integrates the 'cheeky' subject matter of her 1966 short film Bottoms. Rare and highly sought-after signed by both Ono and Lennon. First published in 1964, Yoko Ono's Grapefruit reads as a set of instructions through which the work of art is completed-either literally or in the imagination of the viewer participant. "Grapefruit is one of the monuments of conceptual art of the early 1960s. [Yoko] has a lyrical, poetic dimension that sets her apart from the other conceptual artists. Her approach to art was only made acceptable when white men like Kosuth and Weiner came in and did virtually the same thing as Yoko, but made them respectable and collectible" (David Bourdon). Ono would enact many of the book's scenarios as performance pieces throughout her career, which formed the basis for her art exhibitions, including the highly publicized retrospective exhibition, This Is Not Here in 1971 at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York, that was nearly closed when it was besieged by excited Beatles fans, who broke several of the art pieces.
