Taking a page from the Flaming Lips' Zaireeka project, the Tribes of Neurot issued Grace as a companion piece to the 1999 Neurosis album Times of Grace; the two are designed to be played on separate machines at the same time for a richer, fuller listen stemming from the interaction between the two sound sources. Even so, Grace can stand on its own, although it's far from the alternative-metal rush of Neurosis; rather, it's a collection of sounds sampled from Times of Grace, then altered and combined with dark ambient textures (and occasional bits of dialogue) that complement the moods of the original songs. It functions better as background music than as intense listening; for full attention, it's better combined with Times of Grace. Taking the two together underlines the ambition of the project more effectively, and it's a more active and interesting experience. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
