Inside the first pages of this book are professional reviews from critics around the world; mine is not needed. Yet still I give it for what it's worth, the review of a simple reader. This book ranks in my mind along with Don Quiote, it's that good and that original, and that bitingly funny. The subtitle, A book in 12 fish, alone caught my eye; I had to read it simply because the title is so audacious. But I was surprised, (beyond pleasantly) by its breadth, humanity, humor, and sense of history. Read it, and if you can, in the hard-back version since it's in color there which is critically important -- each of the chapters is printed in the color of a given fish, and each is symbolic of something important to the chapter. Did I like it? Read what critics around the world wrote about it, and you'll get an idea of what I felt when I read it.
