Warm insight into Basie's activities, but do not expect much revelation. Memories are air-brushed to show the author in the best light, so read and enjoy his version of his life.

Fun read for Basie fans
Count Basie was active in music for 50 years -during the years which really formed jazz. Reading his biography one gets a panoramic view of what went on in all these years. Basie often complains that he doesn't remember things, but in fact he provides a detailed account of how he came to create what is arguably the swingingest big band that ever existed. Basie is extremely modest - in fact one can't find anything in this book that even indicates Basie was aware of his phenomenal contributions (although he obviously was).
