Dieter Harmening hat sich auf die Spuren dieser Goldsucher gemacht. Seine heutigen Eindrücke und der authentische Bericht von 1898 vermitteln zusammen mit den historischen Fotos ein faszinierendes Bild. Echt interessantes Buch mit vielen tollen Bildern. Ein Muss für alle geschichtsinteressierten Goldgräberfans. Der Goldrausch in Alaska wie er wirklich war Ein sehr schönes und ausführliches Buch. Gute Schilderung der damaligen Geschehnisse und Bilder die ich bisher noch nie sah. Ein sehr guter Kauf. Der Band vermittelt dank eines herausragenden Bildteils eindrückliche Einblicke in das Leben der alten Goldsucher. Dieser, die Seiten 24 bis 111 umfassende Hauptteil des Buches, zeigt großformatig und in hervorragender Aufnahmequalität alte Originalaufnahmen, die zum Teil die ganze Seitenbreite einnehmen und mit kurzen Erläuterungstexten versehen sind. Die Aufnahmen sind thematisch geordnet und werden von informativen, ausführlicheren Einführungstexten unterbrochen (Themenbereiche: "Wege zum Gold", "Anreise über See", "Siedlungen, "Schürfen" u.a.m.). In das Thema stimmt ein spannender (allerdings gekürzter und überarbeiteter) Reisebericht des deutschen Abenteurers Alexander Baethke aus Berlin, der 1898 über Skagway in das Goldgebiet am Yukon bei Dawson eingereist ist, hervorragend ein (Seiten 1-21). Harmening ist im Yukon Archiv auf dieses "Sahnehäubchen" gestoßen. Den dritten Teil des Buches bildet ein ethnographischer Streifzug des Autors in Alaska, hundert Jahre danach (S. 112-123). In diesem ansich ganz originellen und gutgemeinten dritten Teil des Buches fällt das Werk meines Erachtens etwas ab. Bedingt durch einige unglückliche und unnötig komplizierte Satzkonstruktionen ist der Text hier oft etwas anstrengend zu lesen (Bsp. : "...die Gäste, unter denen sich hochdekorierte Motorradfahrer befinden, gehen durch eine nun wieder geöffnete Tür, in die gleißendes Mittagslicht, wie es hier üblich ist, fällt, nach draußen"). Man sieht Harmening, der insgesamt ein atemberaubendes, in etwa 4 Lesestunden zu verschlingendes Buch zusammengestellt hat, diese kleinen Unzulänglichkeiten gerne nach.
