After former member Elke Wardlaw relocated to Berlin, Thank You's Jeffrey McGrath and Michael Bouyoucas picked up a new recruit in drummer Emmanuel Nicolaidis, who, along with the two core members, plays a little of everything on the band's sophomore album, Golden Worry. This is a new approach, with additional layering in the production, be it vintage organs and mini-Moog keyboard parts, or subtle additions like harmonica or jaw harp. Still, it isn't as if the band is losing sight and switching over to chamber pop. These subtle enhancements are used strictly for dissonance. Yeah Yeah Yeahs/TV on the Radio producer Chris Coady makes Golden Worry sound big and spacious, and like TV on the Radio did with Return to Cookie Mountain, the trio finds comfort in bizarre song structures. The 30 minutes of music is an open-ended, unraveling affair, and as on Terrible Two, the vocal interplay is minimal. Most of the album is devoted to big rhythms in roundabout instrumentals that are equal parts post-rock, post-punk, and no-wave. Like fellow drum-punk groups like Ponytail and Mi Ami, being unconventional is their forte, and while Golden Worry isn't quite as deep as Terrible Two, it's an exciting follow-up, nonetheless. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi
