Like other entries in its Golden Greats series, this compilation from Dutch label Disky is a bare-bones miscellany of tracks recorded by the featured artist and transferred from secondary sources according to the more liberal copyright laws in effect in Europe. It has length and price going for it, sprawling across three CDs containing 73 tracks, with a running time of nearly three-and-three-quarters hours and readily available to U.S. customers inexpensively (although, technically, it probably shouldn't be distributed stateside, since it contains recordings that are not considered out of copyright in America). Those tracks were released originally on Brunswick, Vocalion, Commodore, Decca, and Capitol Records, and the original masters reside in the vaults of three competing major labels, Sony, Universal, and EMI, so you would be unable to find a similar release elsewhere. That's all of the good news, however. The tracks are sequenced more or less randomly, so that, for example, 1949's "Baby Get Lost" is followed by 1938's "You Go to My Head," which tends to accentuate the differences in musical style, in Holiday's vocal quality (which deteriorated over the course of her career), and even in sonic quality between tracks (the '30s material often has a lot of surface noise). There are no annotations beyond the song titles and accompanying orchestras noted in small print on the back of the double-jewel box; there isn't even a CD booklet. Therefore, the customer has no way of knowing that the tracks range from 1935 to 1949 and that they are mostly studio recordings. Some of Holiday's greatest performances are included; others are not. This is really a collection for a casual music fan who wants a Billie Holiday album but isn't very discriminating and plans to use it for background listening. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
