Very good in fair dust jacket. DJ has a tear at the back. Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. viii, 277 p. Illustrations. From Wikipedia: "Golda Meir (earlier Golda Meyerson, born Golda Mabovitch, (May 3, 1898 December 8, 1978) was an Israeli teacher, kibbutznik, politician and the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. Israel's first and the world's third woman to hold such an office, she was described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics years before the epithet became associated with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government"; she was often portrayed as the "strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people". In 1974, after the end of the Yom Kippur War, Meir resigned as prime minister. " Excerpts from an obituary posted on-line: "Robert Slater, a journalist and the author of more than two dozen books, including biographies of figures as diverse as the Israeli leader Golda Meir, the businessman Jack Welch and the billionaire and philanthropist George Soros, died in Jerusalem. He was 70. Mr. Slater was born in Manhattan, but spent much of his life in Israel, moving there in 1971. He worked for about two years for United Press International before joining the Jerusalem bureau of Time magazine. He covered the country for Time for two tumultuous decades, and his reporting and the relationships he made led to biographies of some of Israel s most prominent leaders, including Yitzhak Rabin, the former prime minister; Moshe Dayan, the military leader; and Ms. Meir, who was prime minister from 1969 to 1974. For Golda: The Uncrowned Queen of Israel, published in 1981, Mr. Slater relied on scores of interviews with friends, relatives and colleagues of Ms. Meir. In the book, he reported that King Hussein of Jordan told Ms. Meir during a series of secret discussions that he regretted having attacked Israel in 1967 a historic mistake, the king called it, according to Mr. Slater. He received his bachelor s degree in 1966 from the University of Pennsylvania and in 1967 received his master s degree from the London School of Economics in international relations. From 1987 to 1990, Mr. Slater led the Foreign Press Association in Israel, which represented foreign reporters in discussions with the government and the military. In recent years, he wrote a column for The Jerusalem Report.
