America can boast a fair number of obscure bluegrass labels, and this 24-track compilation is more than enough proof that Copper Creek is one of the best of them. Featuring several songs each by Ralph Stanley, gospel singer Rickey Wasson, the Johnson Mountain Boys, Gary and Jim Brewer, guitarist Charlie Cline, and the Swedish fiddle and banjo duo of Per Christophersson and Thomas Haglund, this is a generous sampler of great, hard-edged bluegrass. As might be expected, it's Stanley who takes the honors. His versions of "Long Gone" and, especially, the hair-raising "Way Down Deep" are the album's highlights. Gary and Jim Brewer's style is something of a variation on the brother-duet tradition. Instead of guitar and mandolin, both play guitar, and they deliver creditable versions of a couple of Carter Family classics, as well as an old Jim Reeves hit ("Baby, I'm All Washed Up With You"). The Johnson Mountain Boys appear here in a pre-big-time incarnation, sounding a bit rawer than they do now, while Christophersson and Haglund play the socks off such standard instrumentals as "Wild Indian" and "Soldier's Joy" (billed here as "Old Folks"). The dark-horse candidate of the program is Wasson, a strong-voiced gospel singer who impresses mightily with his renditions of "You Go to Your Church" and "Paul and Silas." The album's only disappointment is guitarist Charlie Cline, who plays in conscious homage to Merle Travis and has lots of great, speedy licks, but can't always be counted on to keep time very well. Highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
