There is a growing understanding among scholars that certain regions of the world experience similar social and economic challenges even with cultural and political differences between those regions are vast. This book takes that understanding as its starting point for approaching the challenges faced by people living in mountain regions the world over. Just within the US alone, the presence of the Appalachian Center at the University of Kentucky, the Mountains and Sacred Landscapes conference held in 2017 at the New School in New York City, and Appalachian Studies Association conferences planned for 2018 and 2019 point to a sustained and growing interest in this topic. 2. Editor Ann Kingsolver is a very well-known and highly-respected name in the field of Appalachian Studies. She is the director of the Appalachian Center and the Appalachian Studies Program at the University of Kentucky. This is her fourth book 3. Because the scope of this work takes a global perspective, the collection will also find a broader scholarly audience among global studies scholars, poverty studies scholars and others focused on economic policy.
