Yet he was greatly admired, not only by his contemporaries, but into the 19th century when Vivaldi and all the rest had been forgotten. This release by the young Russian violinist Evgeny Sviridov makes an excellent place to start exploring the rest of his output. Russia has not been known for historical performances, but Sviridov, trained partly in the West and playing an extraordinary Januarius Gagliano instrument, gives attractive and insightful performances. Some of the sonatas are played solo; others have an accompaniment by harpsichord or harpsichord and cello (it is not really a "continuo" by this time, for the harmonic motion has already been freed). The Gagliano is capable of slashing tones in the fast passages and of sweet singing in the slow ones like the arresting Adagio...
