This book is a pure farce fantasy-romance, but a lot of fun. Jane Madison is a librarian in Georgetown (the one in DC), 29 years old, and just recovering from being dumped about a year earlier by her SO of eight years. The library is a small private one specializing in American Colonial material, and their budget is so tight that the board, over her boss?s protests, cut her pay by 25%. But in compensation they agree to let her live in a cottage on the museum grounds that?s gone unoccupied for decades. It turns out to be in decent shape, other than needing a thorough cleaning, which Jane and her BFF Melissa accomplish with a day?s hard work. And then Jane finds the key to the basement door, and when she goes down she finds a sizable library of books about magic - and when she recites a spell from a book lying open on a reading stand, the statue of a large cat comes to life and turns into a very handsome - and very gay - human male, who announces that he?s Neko, her new familiar. And shortly thereafter another very handsome, and not at all gay, human male turns up and tells her he?s David, her warder, charged with keeping her from making trouble with her magic. And then there?s her Imaginary Boyfriend, Jason, a professor at a nearby university, who starts putting moves on her that she?d been trying to get to happen for the past several months. Mean-while, her mother, who?d abandoned her at age 4 and who she thought had been killed in a car wreck, turns up and wants to re-establish a relationship Jane isn?t at all sure she wants. It?s a very funny book; Jane is one of your more clueless types, but she?s gutsy and determined, and the other characters are mostly fun in their own way.
