I have heard of a lot of hype around Girl, Woman, Other which won a lot of awards including the Booker Prize of 2019.
Girl, Woman, Other follows 12 characters in a snapshot of their struggles and their lives, to show what it means to be a black woman living in Britain today.
I might be a little controversial in saying that I didn't particularly enjoy reading Girl, Woman, Other. I admit that it is an important book, and shines the spotlight on an often overlooked demographic in our society. However, the book in general didn't really grab me - there's no overarching plot, nothing to really sink our teeth into. At the end of the day, twelve perspectives - which each include in-depth detail of families, friends and backstories, is quite a lot of people to keep track of. Some of these characters are interlinked into other stories, but as I found it hard to keep them straight anyway, this didn't really make an impact.
As well as not having a plot, the content that is there is quite sadly bleak. I consider myself to be a modern feminist, but every man portrayed is either a rapist or an abusive partner or a terrible person - there's no light and shade. Some of the stories are interesting but they start to feel similar and monotonous by the end.
Overall, Girl, Women, Other is an important depiction of black women in British society - but I didn't find it a particularly engaging read, sadly. Thank you to NetGalley & Penguin Books UK - Hamish Hamilton for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
