Excerpt from Gill's Dictionary of the Chinook Jargon: With Examples of Use in Conversation, and Notes Upon Tribes and Tongues These early records prove that the same words, or deriv atives now incorporated in the Chinook Jargon, retain their old significance. Several little books, mostly for traders' use, have been printed in this Jargon. Some were intended for the special use of missions and missionaries; some as interesting addi tions to philology. Among the men who have written the vocabularies and best treatises on the Jargon may be named: Dr. Frans Boas, Alexander Ross, Rev. Samuel Parker, Doc tor Tolmie, Dawson, Rev. J. H. Frost, George Gibbs, Tate, Good, Winthrop, Swan, Hale and Rev. Dr. Eells. The latter translated into Chinook a number of hymns, which were published in Portland, 1889, and are still extant. A com plete Bibliography of the Chinook was prepared by Mr. J ames C. Pilling (1889) and published by the Bureau of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution.
