This disc reissues James Darren's long-players Sings the Movies (Gidget Goes Hawaiian) (1961) and Sings for All Sizes (1961) onto a single CD. Both are from the multimedia teen idol's four full-length solo Colpix Records releases. Enthusiasts should likewise note the availability of the other two LPs, Album No. 1 (1960) and Love Among the Young (1962), on a similar package. These efforts represent distinctly more youth-oriented material, much of which was derived from his concurrent silver screen appearances. Sings the Movies (Gidget Goes Hawaiian) (1961) was Darren's second offering and includes tunes from the romantic comedy Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961). Additionally, there are a host of other cinematic songs from the "Golden Age" of tinsel town filling out the record. As well as the mid-tempo island-influenced "Gidget Goes Hawaiian," the other cut from the film, "Wild About That Girl," is incorporated into the tune stack. "Hand in Hand," from the motion picture of the same name, is given a lovely, heartfelt reading. The fully orchestrated "You Are My Dream," taken from the animated feature 1001 Arabian Nights (1959), harks back to Darren's decidedly more adult pop standards circa Album No. 1 and Love Among the Young. Even more haphazardly arranged is Sings for All Sizes (1962). According to James Ritz' liner essay, this compile was the result of the success of "Goodbye Cruel World," which became Darren's first Top Ten smash. The remainder consists of an assortment of singles and one-off tracks. The pseudo-novelty "Goodbye Cruel World" and the lightweight "I Don't Wanna Lose Ya" are well-intentioned, but musically (if not artistically) lacking. They project Darren in a less staid atmosphere. There are a few redeemable melodies, such as the early single "Angel Face" and "How Sweet Are You," the latter of which sports a backing that recalls Frankie Avalon's breakthrough, "Venus." ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi
