Given the author's long time experience with the DSS I had hoped to have a better understanding of counter terrorism activities. Instead we got lots of personal thoughts about terrorists and frequent references to favorite clothing items. There was a little bit of history of early DSS development but the book was short on information. The good news? Terrorists won't get much help from it either! Wish the author would give it another try, perhaps with help from a "Ghost" writer. Sorry! Kudos for many years of service to the country however.

Must Read to Understand War on Terror
Reading this book is like getting hit with a firehose of information about the daily struggles to stay on top, much less ahead, of the many fronts in the war on terrorism...and it starts in the early 80's. It is indeed sobering to understand how little has changed in over 20 years vis a vis the nature of the threat, except that our ghostly heroes like Burton have been so successful in protecting us a huge percentage of the time. No one should doubt the resolve of the enemy, nor the people iike Burton who have sacrificed much, if not all, to protect us. We're fooling ourselves if we think we can just "talk" or "reason" with these enemies. We cannot become complacent. This book is a definitely wakeup call.
