Funny Book on Why We Must Abolish TV
When you read anti-television literature, most of it is very self- serious, grave rehashes of statistics on TV-viewing and crime, etc. Not here. The whole book is written as a parody and pastiche, in the manner of a self-help manual. Every page features witty quotes, facts, stunning observations and the like. But the link for it all is a simple message: Television cannot be reformed. Get rid of it now.
We are treated to the shallow techniques used to keep us watching, the necessity of scandal on TV, TV in light of the internet, and a variety of discussions that illustrate the medium's ultimate inanity. The duo call television on the sick joke that it is.
This sounds monotonous, but the writers avoid doom-and-gloom scenarios by showing organizations to join, drinks to mix, even, at the end,how to have a party, rather that turn on THAT THING. They invite us to ask a most basic question. Why do we need to pay people to entertain us ? A worthy book for anyone who wants to kick the telly habit, or at least wants to laugh a little.
