The Estrada Brothers debuted for Milestone company with this spirited 1996 CD. The group (long a fixture in the Los Angeles area) is most notable for their continuation of the Cal Tjader legacy, extending the vibraphonist's Latin jazz innovations while developing their own appealing sound. Ruben Estrada (on vibes, percussion and occasional trumpet) and Henry Estrada (on various reeds) are joined by pianist Joe Rotondi, Jr, bassist Malcom Ian Peters, drummer Ruben Estrada, Jr. and the sparkplug of the group Raul Rico on congas. The band sings on the humorous "Get Out Of My Way" but otherwise this is a purely instrumental set. Standards such as "Tin Tin Deo," a Latinized "Blue Moon," "Blue Bossa" and "Besame Mucho" are joined by a few originals and the music is consistently infectious, rhythmic and hot. Fans of the music of Tito Puente and Poncho Sanchez will have little difficultly enjoying this delightful outing. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
