A very reasonably priced book on beginning German. Very helpful in understanding German grammar, which is fairly different from English, even though English is itself a germanic language. Well, the similarity ended sometime in the early middle ages.... as in French, objects have gender assignments, and so all nouns must be learned with the appropriate article, which depends on gender. From there one proceeds to the grammar part, very different from English. This book explains it pretty well, and even if a class text is being used, the slightly condensed nature of the book makes it easier to grasp some of the trickier concepts. As with any language, no such book can be used on a stand-alone basis, since German pronunciation is so different, despite many similarities between German & English. A tutor or teacher with a very good grasp of typical German pronunciation is an essential component of learning German, but once the basics of how German is pronounced, it becomes a fairly simple matter to be able to spell and write German, as spelling & pronunciation are much, much more regular than in English, and (in my opinion) even easier than French. Keep in mind that there are a number of German dialects, as a number of countries have German as the national language (or at least as one of them, as in Switzerland, where 80% of Swiss speak German as their native tongue), and so select your teacher or tutor with a mind to learning German as it is most often heard in modern Germany on TV or radio, etc. I recommend this book for anyone learning German.
