The opening Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488, suffers from both an ungraceful performance by the Camerata Academica Salzburg and terrible sound that makes its strings sound like a subway car taking a curve, but these traits do serve to emphasize the magical quality of Thyssens-Valentin's playing. Her approach is subtle, perhaps feminine in the terms of the day, extremely smooth, and full of very fine gradations of color in quieter passages. She is one of the few pianists who has been able to pull off a very slow, almost tragic interpretation of the concerto's central movement.
