Seller's Description:
Very good in very good dust jacket. German painter Gerhard Richter has collected pictures for his "Atlas" since the beginning of his career, finding ordinary snapshots from newspapers and magazines on many subjects including animals, stars, aeroplanes and his friends. Later he began to use his own photographs exclusively, taking landscape and nature sequences and pictures of his family. Bringing the images together, he arranged them on sheets to form a collection conveying the artist's own life and the world outside-a repository which continues to evolve throughout the years. He showed his collection for the first time in 1972 when he had over 300 sheets. This catalogue accompanies the 1997 display of "Atlas" in Munich, with the work now comprising 633 sheets, each containing numerous images including sketches for work, drawings for his house and studio, travel photographs, landscapes and pictures of his family. On the occasion of the Munich exhibition, the artist has extensively revised and updated the catalogue. How the "Atlas" came into being is described in an introductory essay outlining Richter's work. Preferring to arrange his photographs thematically rather than in rigid chronological order, the rhythm and diversity of the illustrations reflect his life and art.
