Detective Buckler allowed a sardonic smile to flit across his heavy face. "Not much need for ' special messengers, ' " he said with a grim chuckle. "Just you look in here, sir, if you please." Maurice found himself standing on the threshold of a small room, furnished on one side by a long low counter, on which stood the apparatus of the Electric Telegraph. On the other side two police officers sat at an office table, busily entering in their ledgers the messages which the telegraph wires flash into the room. There they sat holding in their hands the mysterious pulse of London life. In a moment, by one turn of the hand, the intelligence of some awful crime, some terrible catastrophe, any of the thousand and one sad facts of human existence, may be sent quivering through every artery of the great city. From Stepney. to Woolwich, from Dulwich to Poplar, the messages pass and repass through the heart of the system, the little room in Scotland Yard, and are carefully entered in the ledger. It gave Maurice a hopeless sense of sadness. Never before had the mysterious darkness of London life pressed on him so heavily.
