For headbangers, discovering industrial rock was as inevitable as discovering hip-hop and punk. Industrial -- like metal, hip-hop, and punk -- can be a very aggressive, rebellious, in-your-face form of music. So when Ministry and like-minded artists started fusing metal and industrial in the late '80s, it was a natural and logical combination -- not to mention an infectious one. The word "infectious" easily describes most of Gemination, the debut album by the Geminus Sect. This North Carolina duo has an attractive industrial/metal sound that can be described as Ministry meets the Electric Hellfire Club with a touch of Alice Cooper. By early-2000s standards, this 2002 effort isn't innovative or groundbreaking; Ministry and their colleagues were doing this sort of thing at least 13 years earlier. But in terms of passion and sheer infectiousness, Gemination has a lot going for it. While the Geminus Sect can be brutally abrasive, they're also relatively melodic and have a strong sense of groove -- which is why Gemination would probably do well at a fetish/S&M/bondage event. The whips-and-chains crowd tends to appreciate industrial artists who love to groove, and Geminus does a lot of forceful grooving on this appealing, if imperfect, CD. Gemination's greatest flaw is the production; Gemination sounds a bit under-produced and would have been better off with a sharper, clearer production. The sound quality isn't bad, but it isn't ideal either and doesn't quite do Geminus justice. One can only imagine how great they could sound with a first-class producer like Trent Reznor or Wharton Tiers. But only a nitpicky audiophile would let the sound quality prevent him/her from enjoying this album. Gemination isn't perfect, but all things considered, it's a promising debut for the industrial/metal agitators. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
