Of what use would it be to pull down a house for the sake of distributing the bricks amongst a certain number of persons? Does God distribute heavenly good on this plan? Though the gift of God is immense, when viewed in proportion to the effort of man, God will have it, that only by putting forth effort can we realise the full blessing which Christ's redemption procured for us. "No man enough possesses, Until he has to spare; Possession no man blesses, While self is all his care." If we feel as a bruised reed, let us remember that we are ruled by One who has a reed for His sceptre. There was that in Judas which betrayed him to himself before he betrayed his Master. Professing ourselves to be wise, we may become fools; admitting ourselves to be foolish, we may become wise unto God. Every true king has his crown of thorns. Do men gather grapes of thorns?
