As a Chinese adoptee in St. Louis, teenage Daiyu often feels out of place. When an elderly Asian jewelry seller at a street fair shows her a black jade ring--and tells her that black jade translates to Daiyu--she buys it as a talisman of her heritage. But it's more than that; it's magic.

I found this book a pleasant and completely engrossing read. It may be that I'm in my second childhood, but I find modern life has sufficient real horrors that it is a genuine pleasure to read something that has a happy ending.
I f I have a complaint about Gateway it is that it calls out for a sequel and whether one is on the stocks or not I have no idea.
Read and enjoy!

Fun
I'd read just about anything if Sharon Shinn wrote it. I thought Gateway was an excellent young adult book. Gateway didn't have an abundance of depth, or make my heart stop with thrilling scenes, but it was charming in a quiet sort of way. It wasn?t overly exciting, but it had a good enough plot to keep my interest, and I loved the end. I enjoyed the characters and the humanness they had. It was a fine book to cuddle up with on a quiet winter evening. I would recommend it to young girls who want something less taxing to read.
