This short book describes the main clinical entities in a concise but detailed manner that is easy to digest, yet more than sufficient to provide a good insight into this specialty.
To take an example, the coverage of upper GI bleeding delves into the common causes such as peptic ulcer and the concomitant risk of neoplasm as well as the less common but important other causes, including taking a history of any previous aortic aneurysm repair, and the possibility of an aorto-duodenal fistula. One minor shortcoming I noticed is that neither in the GI bleeding pages nor in the gastric ulcer section is there a mention of the anatomical difference between encroachment of the gastroduodenal artery or of the left hepatic artery, which would give some idea as to the gross location of the ulcer; having said that, there is ample analysis of the potential results of endoscopy that would probably give a better indication of this parameter.
As in general with the ICT series, this book could be read in one sitting, and would impart a clear, concise, broad yet comprehensive glimpse into gastroenterology, definitely sufficient for a medical student, and perhaps for a GP, too.
In summary, an easy-to-read, enjoyable and complete introduction to the subject.
