On poets.org, Gary Soto is listed as being in the top 20 of most popular living poets. He is a fiction and children's book writer as well. After reading his selected poems, it appears to me that his skill may lie more in prose than verse. Many of the poems are confessional and/or autobiographical in tone and are almost invariably written in a narrative (rather than lyric) style. By the time I finished the book, I had only dog-eared and underlined one poem from the entire collection as being worthy of revisiting...a poem about migrant farm work.
Overall, the collection does not hold sustained interest for me because Soto fails to make enough interesting connections within his poems. Again, most read like mini-essays or matter-of-fact historical reflections from his own past. Too many of the poems could easily pass as journal entries written by someone with above-average literary skill.
For those who do like narrative/confessional poetry (poetry that tells a story often from a first-person perspective) I would suggest Mark Doty's "Fire to Fire" new and selected poems instead. Doty is much more skilled at holding the reader's attention for a poem that goes beyond one page. He is also the only American to win the T.S. Eliot Prize for poetry from the United Kingdom.
