Readers step right into conflict in the opening scene of Games. A typical middle school hallway becomes a fist fight freeway when Mick and Boot mix it up - again. Then, the principal forces them together to learn how to get along. But, will they? What are they really fighting about anyway? Themselves? Their families? The chick who eggs them on?
Gorman reveals just enough about each boy's life that they are instantly pretty unlikable. Bullies each who are pretty egotistical and need to be "whopped upside the head." Maybe that is part of the problem.
The format - chapters alternately written from each character's perspective - gets the reader right inside the action and we see through the myopic lens of "teendom": At once tough and tender, foolish and smart, cruel and compassionate.
Then, comes the "ah-ha" moment and the story begins to resolve for readers and characters alike.
Adults get a glimpse inside and teens' world and valid topics. Intermediate, middle and high school, adults, too.
