They're attractive works that do have a certain spontaneity, but the real star here is the flutist, Ashley Solomon, and his collection of three period flutes, one made of wood (a 2004 copy of a 1750 instrument), one of porcelain, and one of ivory. The shades of tone among the three are fascinating indicators of what was available to a musician with money to spend in the middle of the 18th century, but even better is how Solomon plays them. There is not a bit of the whining uneven intonation so common in period flute and recorder performances. Instead, every note is weighed, considered, and precisely executed.
