Handel gets top billing in the graphics here, but in fact this Didone Abbandonata is a work by the Italian composer Leonardo Vinci, who died at age 40 in 1730 before his influence was fully appreciated. He was on the stylistic cutting edge, simplifying and honing to directness the ornate opera seria style that Handel, among others, had perfected. Handel's contribution was to revise the work for its London production, a decade after Vinci wrote the work.
