However, other works by this composer, who cared about his audiences, whether he was writing serialist or neo-Romantic music, have been surfacing, and the present release is part of a complete set of the composer's string quartets from the Tippett Quartet. The string quartet genre boundary is crossed with the Sonata for two violins, Op. 10, but this is a fine idea: this early work is an excellent slice of the Polish avant-garde in the 1950s. It's inspired by Bartók's 44 Duos but pushes the language in the direction of serial organization. Górecki's personality, even in this idiom, is entirely evident.
