WHILE Kunsho in his Hundred Views of Fuji merely aims at a bare delineation of the great Mountain, our venerable Hokusai here presents to us the picturesque aspects of the Peerless Hill, and the following pages show with how sure and bold a brush, with how unrivalled a talent, he has rendered every feature of his subject. Our venerable Master indeed, who, if report be true, has overlived his ninetieth year, shows all the vigour of youth in his work; and, indeed, it was on this famous Mountain that of old the Elixir of Life was sought for and found. When this Third Volume was ready for publication, I was asked to contribute a Preface to it, to which request I acceded without ado. Written by the old gentleman Ogasawara, living at the foot of the Mountain of the Seven Treasures (Shichi-ho-zan.) See Preface to the First Volume. DESCRIPTION OF PLATES. PLATE I. Akasawa No Fuji. A sort of frontispiece, representing a struggle between two noted wrestlers (sumo-tori), named Matanogoro Kumihisa and Kawadzusaburo Sukeyosu, who dwelt in the quarter or ward of Yedo known as Akasawa. PLATE II. Noretsu Henkei No Fuji. Distant view of the Mountain from the natural bridge formed of the intertwining branches of two ancient and gnarled pines at Noretau, over which pilgrims pass on their way up Nantai-zan, the high Mountain towering over the lake of Chiuzenji, near Nikko, some ninety miles north of Yedo. PLATE III. Shiusetsu No Fuji. The Mountain in a Snowstorm. The drear winter aspect is well rendered, and the effect is heightened by the train of wayfarers gathering their snow-laden straw capes closely round them as some protection against the biting cold.
