You see I don't forget the slights I have put upon me, but I seldom have a chance to pay them off 'so agreeably as I have now." "You are an unfeeling monster," exclaimed Frowzle, driven to desperation, "and if ever I get out of this..." "But you ivorit, you know," interrupted the woodchuck, with a bland smile. "You will hold out, probably, till... let me see..." The woodchuck, however, never finished his sentence, for an unlooked-for interruption occurred. Footsteps--human footsteps, too--were heard approaching, and the woodchuck, shy of all humankind, slunk away, and quickly disappeared from sight. The two dogs awaited in anxiety the approach of the new-comer. They feared it might be the surly-looking man they had seen in the hut, and knew they had nothing to hope for in that quarter, so they kept very still, that they might not attract his attention. Listening anxiously, with loudly beating hearts, the forlorn little prisoners waited to catch a glimpse through the trees of the new arrival. Would he never appear, or would he turn off in another direction?
