Grey Owl was born Archibald Stansfeld Belaney in 1888, in Hastings, England. He died in 1938 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, as the famed North American Indian conservationist Grey Owl. On emigrating to Canada, he spent his early years as a trapper in northern Ontario and Quebec. By his mid-thirties he had become a protector of wildlife, particularly beaver, and a popular author and lecturer.
