An Oldie But Goodie
Published in 1949, this is a history of Man's methods of communication and education,
focused primarily on Man's art as the medium. Beginning with prehistoric cave art, Hogben traces the development of Man's visual communications through the inventions of stone calendars, the alphabet, writing, printing, picture cards for teaching religion to the illiterate, right down to the creation of modern comic books, photographs, and movie film. Well detailed, it includes the inside story of the creation of "Wonder Woman," the first female superhero in comic book history (the reason I've searched for this book for several years). It's an excellent research resource, and I'm delighted to have it.
