It should be noted that it was also he who first introduced the work of Soviet poet Nikolai Rubtsov to an English-speaking audience. It is however, for his work on the Russian novel that he is particularly renowned, and accordingly it is to this theme that the present collection of essays in his honour are devoted. Written by some of his former colleagues and pupils, they range from new assessments of well-known and neglected authors, to studies of individual novels, from Pushkin at the begining of the 19th century to post-modernism at the end of the 20th.
