Tugs at your heart for both puppy and soldiers
I would really give this book 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the story but found the writing a little stilted. Still, I would highly recommend it simply for the depiction of what many of the soldiers and others go through in Iraq and how trying to save a puppy provoked an internal struggle for those soldiers. I was touched to see a soldier describe how soldiers struggle to hold onto their humanity among so much destruction. If you're expecting a loveable, touchy, feely story...don't. There are many parts of the book that are difficult to read (but important). I applaud the author for not sugar coating his work.
