The noble beast showed all his teeth, and growled fiercely, as he turned round upon him; and I turned my head just in time to see the dastard--the contemptible dastard--point the muzzle of his gun towards the head of my brave hound, and lay his finger on the trigger. I had tried his strength: in an instant, the gun was whirling through the air, far down into the glen; and in another moment he followed it. I seized him by the throat, and thrust him down the steep bank with my foot. I could have done it, in the strength of my long-repressed scorn and passion, had he been the Wallace wight himself. "I returned home, fully expecting to be called upon to give the fellow--craven as he was--the satisfaction of a gentleman. I thought he could do no less.
