The Tsars collected French art and sent emissaries to purchase paintings and sculpture, which was sold off after the French Revolution. In later times, the great Russian connoisseurs, Marozov and Shchukin, used their wealth to buy Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in great quantities.
