With the exception of Zane Grey, Ernest Haycox is my favorite western author. And with the publication of Free Grass as his first hard cover novel in 1929 by DoubleDay, Doran and Company the world was offered this man's magnificent work. Originally published as a magazine serial, as nearly everything he ever wrote was, Free Grass conforms to what the magazine editors wanted in the way of conflict and action, love interest, and the like. There was a "formula" every story had to achieve if it was to be printed in the magazines, even the so called "slicks" of the day such as The Saturday Evening Post. Ernest Haycox wrote to "formula" pushing the boundaries when ever he could and as much as the editors would allow him. Free Grass doesn't push any boundaries; it is strict "western" all the way, and the better for it. Texan Tom Gilette has driven a herd of cattle more than a thousand miles to find a place to make a home--the free Dakota Range--only to find things just the same as he had left in Texas. But he was determined not to move again, even if it meant a fight. This novel is early in Ernest Haycox's writing career, yet you can see the brillance of the man showing even then in his selective use of prose, his sentance patterns, and his well drawn characterizations. With the passage of years these things only became stronger and the things for which he became known. For a "first" novel it really doesn't get any better. Five Stars all the way.
