The effort is framed as an attempt to imagine what might have happened if someone had not scared the child Mozart with a trumpet, and Mozart had written sonatas for the newer chromatic trumpets that came along in his adulthood. What makes the music interesting, even for the skeptical, is that Jones approaches his task in four different ways, drawing on music from different parts of Mozart's career. One piece, the Sonata No. 2 in B flat major, is a straight transcription of the Piano Sonata in D major, K. 284, with an added trumpet part derived from the basic melodic material.
