With life settling into a mindless routine, Jenny's fate has different plans. In the summer, Jenny meets Kyle, a visitor to Kane's Landing searching for a connection to his ancestral past. The research keeps Kyle in town for several weeks during which he develops a bond with Jenny. Kyle learns that Victor, his great-great-grandfather, came to town as an orphan on the orphan trains in the late 1800s. As the summer comes to an end, in a twist of fate, Kyle must decide whether to adopt a newborn. In the fall, Jenny's best friend Val, the editor of the local newspaper, discovers a passion for marketing and promotion. She takes a simple idea about international omelets and makes stars of the local chefs, Sam and Alex. Val, who came to Kane's Landing for her career five years ago, must decide if her future is back home building a new marketing business. In the winter, Jenny helps the town pastor, Father Mike, develop a green initiative for the town.
